Littoral Charm

The city of Melo is typical of the littoral region. It has the essential charms to attract visitors with its history, culture and people. It is worth visiting.

On the left bank of Conventos Stream, there lies this beautiful and prosperous city called Melo. The city keeps the traditions of the streets and squares that harmonize with the novelties.

Its nearness to the South of Brazil makes this city one of the most typical of the littoral region in the country. Its climate is warm all year round and this is evidenced by its lush flora and fauna.

The local zoo, as well as the myriad of parks surrounding the city, turn out to be a clear example of native species in terms of animals and vegetation inhabiting the region.

Tigers, lions and llamas are loved by the little ones who also come to see toucans, monkeys, anteaters, capybaras, caiman and all kinds of birds which get closer to pry with total freedom.

A City for Everyone

For those who love walking and do not want to get too far away, it is advisable to begin with a visit to the downtown area and its surroundings, where there are outstanding public squares.

The main square of Melo was named Constitución and it contains the monument of the national hero General José Gervasio Artigas, a milestone that can be seen at first sight.

The cathedral provides shade and its beautiful shape to the square. Founded in 1876, the cathedral has witnessed many important events since its creation.

The square Independence, also located in the downtown part of the city, is the chosen place for the family to meet on weekends. A few meters away, there is the buildings housing the Centro Unión Obrero and the España Theater, two typical institutions in the city.


History without Limit

Zorrilla of San Martin Park is another place chosen, above all, by families to gather on weekends. Its perfect location on the banks of Conventos Stream provides the place with a unique beauty. It is ideal to spend the day there.

Another attraction is the shopping tour around the oldest stores in the city, as well as in modern shops, so-called “free shops”, that have lately displayed not only national but also Brazilian products.

Melo has a historical and cultural heritage that attracts visitors. The house of unforgettable writer Juana de Ibarbourou, called “Juana of America” by the people, is another place in this city that cannot be left out, above all if you are as fond of literature and politics as Juana was.
