Tours and Activities:
Good Morning, Nice to Meet You
Pablo Etchevers Pablo EtcheversThe city of Maldonado keeps the spirit of a small town intact even though it is a city under constant development. Getting lost in its streets and its people to get to know the city is worthwhile.
It is said that time is cruel and waits for no man, however, this incurable movement that affects everything and everybody and, of course, the city, is not always the same. A walk along the city streets and avenues of Maldonado is just enough to see that the past is part of the present.
The streets of Maldonado can be walked in an almost routine mood that invites to have a coffee on every corner, to observe the habitués and read the newspaper headlines.
The old cars, the small motorbikes with their bikers and hundreds of rusted or new bicycles set the daily rhythm of this city during the year, which goes remarkably faster during the high season because of neighboring Punta del Este.
Love At First Sight
Declared National Historical Monument, San Fernando de Maldonado Cathedral is one of the most outstanding buildings around the main square of the city.
The cathedral was built in 1801. Many years ago when the Spanish crown began to take interest in the area, a dying Christ was found on the beach of the city and now can be seen over the altar.
The main square of the city is called Plaza San Fernando de Maldonado where many cultural events, concerts and important political and social meetings take place.
The Cuartel de Dragones (Dragons Headquarters) is another important building that you cannot miss. Its construction was finished in 1797 and there are cultural and historical traces that can help the tourists travel back in time.
Calle Real is known for its age and most of the tourists stop there to see what story it tells. There is no doubt it is the oldest street in the city.
If you continue walking, you will find the Estadio Municipal de Maldonado (Municipal Stadium Maldonado), a huge sport facility that was the venue of important Latin American events and today houses one of the most important teams in Uruguay: el Deportivo.
The easy access to the beach from the city gives tourists other options while doing the city tour.
Surrounded by pine forests, sea, small lakes and sand, Maldonado has it all to make the visitors feel comfortable. The city has a charm of its own. It is not just a place to pass through.
