Across the Uruguay river, facing Fray Bentos, Gualeguaychú is famous throughout Argentina for its carnival, the Carnaval del País.

What it is like

It takes place every Saturday night in January and February at the corsódromo, opened in 1997, which holds tens of thousands of people. The comparsas compete with hundreds of performers, giant floats, feathers and sequins. Its current format dates from the late 1970s.

Beyond the carnival

The city has a waterfront, beaches on the Gualeguaychú river and hot springs nearby.

Getting there from Uruguay

From Fray Bentos, cross the Libertador General San Martín international bridge: Gualeguaychú is a few kilometres away.

Tips

  • Buy tickets in advance.
  • Book accommodation early: the city fills up on carnival Saturdays.
  • Bring your ID to cross the border.
