Minas, capital of Lavalleja, is surrounded by the hills of eastern Uruguay. A few kilometres from town there are hills, waterfalls and villages for a nature weekend.

Cerro Arequita

About 12 km north of Minas, this rocky hill of volcanic origin hides the Gruta de Colón cave. From the top, the view over the hills is wide.

Parque Salus

About 9 km from town, among hills and woodland, it is known for its springs and the "Puma fountain".

Salto del Penitente

A waterfall of about 60 metres dropping between rocks and hill vegetation, with lookouts, trails and picnic areas. Depending on the season, there are horse rides, zip lines and climbing.

Villa Serrana

About 25 km north-east of Minas, this hillside village was born in the 1940s thanks to architect Julio Vilamajó. Stone houses with thatched roofs, walks and views: perfect to unplug.

Tips

  • A car is the best way to get around: the sights are spread out.
  • Check each park's hours and activities before you go.
