On a Monday in February, the main street fills with costumes, giant heads, drums and floats made by the locals.

What began in the 1950s as a party of friends and neighbours in costume became one of the most popular carnivals in Uruguay. The La Pedrera social and sports club organised the first official edition in 1999, with about 200 people; today it draws thousands to the main street.
What it is like
It takes place on carnival Monday, usually in February. The parade begins in the afternoon with the youngest, followed by giant heads, drums and floats built by the locals. At nightfall the corso begins, with themed groups. It is not an orderly parade like the Llamadas: spontaneity and colour are its essence.
Tips
- The date and programme are announced each year on the Turismo Rocha website.
- Book accommodation well ahead: it is one of the busiest weekends on the coast.
- Arrive early and keep an eye on your belongings in the crowd.
