A 1912 garden promenade that works as an open-air museum, an island reached by a footbridge and river trips.

Mercedes, capital of the department of Soriano, lives facing the Río Negro. Its waterfront, cobbled streets and port make it a relaxed getaway on the Uruguayan riverside.
The waterfront promenade
Built on the riverbank in 1912, it is laid out as a French-style garden with mulberries, araucarias, ceibos, palms and roses. Its bronze and marble sculptures, busts and steles earned it the nickname "Open Museum".
Isla del Puerto
Linked to the city by a footbridge, it is a natural refuge with a campsite and services, ideal for a day by the water.
The river
The renovated piers and port offer services for boats and a range of trips on the Río Negro.
More to do
- Stroll the cobbled streets and century-old houses downtown.
- Follow the cultural calendar: the city hosts, among others, a street jazz festival.
Tips
- Festival dates and river trip times: check before you travel.
