Nueva Palmira and Carmelo lie a few kilometres apart on the west coast of the department of Colonia, facing the Paraná delta. Together they make a good day trip.

Morning: Punta Gorda

About 4 km from Nueva Palmira, Punta Gorda is where the Uruguay river ends and the Río de la Plata begins: kilometre zero of the Uruguay river. Its lookout takes in the delta and the big ships. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1976.

Midday: Calera de las Huérfanas

On the way to Carmelo, the ruins of this 1741 Jesuit estate, with its church and old lime kilns, are explored among native woodland.

Afternoon: Carmelo

End the day in Carmelo, with its swing bridge over the Arroyo de las Vacas, the waterfront and the local wineries.

Tips

  • A car is the best way to do it.
  • Visiting hours for the Calera and the wineries: check in advance.
