The department of Cerro Largo, whose capital is Melo, has its own beach: the Lago Merín resort, on the shores of Laguna Merín, about 20 km from Río Branco and about 110 km from Melo. The lagoon, some 200 km long, is also a natural border between Uruguay and Brazil.

What to do

  • Beach: calm fresh water, ideal for families.
  • Water sports: in recent years it has become a popular kitesurfing spot.
  • Fishing: silverside, wolf fish, catfish and other species.
  • Nature: around the lagoon you can see herons, rheas, southern screamers, capybaras and coypus, among others.

Tips

  • Summer is high season, but it is a good getaway the rest of the year too.
  • Check current fishing regulations before going out.
